Every morning brings with it a new day, a new dawn and for some people a routine . How I envy those people who know what they are going to do every minute of the day. I was reading a blog post this morning about 11 September being designated as Make Your Bed Day. Now that was the funniest day I’ve ever heard of – imagine dedicating a special day for making your bed!! But of course the post was more about how making a bed as the first job for the day sets the tone for the rest of the day and why it is important to start right.
Well, I do make my bed but it comes down in the pecking order of jobs to be done. Any my jobs to be done vary from day to day. Some mornings I begin by switching on my computer to catch up with mails or to get some writing done while my head is still clear. Some mornings the first job I do is take out the garbage and boil up the milk. On some days I start my morning with a brisk walk down in the garden. And some mornings I get up with my grandson nuzzling me, slowly waking up to his morning and alerting me that I will soon have to leap out and get his milk ready.
But I do agree that making a bed is of paramount importance in the order of household chores. There is something so satisfying about shaking up the sheets, pulling them down, taking out all the creases and then tucking them in to leave a smooth creaseless surface. And then fluffing down the pillows, folding down the counterpane and finally putting the bed spread on top to leave the bed looking unslept and untouched. Equally satisfying is the feeling of making a new bed with fresh sheets straight from the laundry.
Well, let me get down to making my bed!
