Master of None
I’ve been on this earth for over 50 years now. Getting closer to 60. In this time I’ve been to over 4 schools and 3 colleges. I’ve acquired two college degrees and won numerous prizes for scholastic achievement. I can speak three languages apart from my native tongue . I have published a cook book on a little known cuisine. Yet I can say with all certainty that I’m a Master of None
If there’s one thing I can tell you lots about – it is motherhood.
Like most little girls of my generation I grew up playing with dolls. Today, fifty years on, I’m still playing with my life size dolls – my two little girls who’ve grown in women. These two little women are not taller than me, smarter than me and no – they never played with dolls.
My days of playing with dolls trained me to look after little ones for I used to spend hours dressing them, feeding them and dragging them to school and teaching them. Hours of role playing made looking after my own little girls a breeze. Of course these dolls were different – they were alive. They could talk back. They could cry. They could have tantrums. And they could hug you back in return. And even though they grow up, they never really do.
A lifelong commitment
Motherhood is not time bound. It is a 24 x 7 commitment that lasts all life long.
It requires patience : try getting a 3 year old to hurry up and get ready in 5 minutes.
It requires diplomacy : have you faced flack for praising one child in front of the other?
It requires ingenuity : try passing off a failed chocolate cake as a fudgy brownie.
It requires inventiveness : inventing games while travelling, waiting in queues, getting kids to do something they don’t like doing
It requires stamina : you have to be nursemaid, cook, teacher, driver, counsellor, from the minute you wake up till the moment they sleep.
A reward unparalleled
However, one thing is for sure : the reward is unparalleled. No matter how frazzled you are, no matter how little time you have for yourself, no matter how tired you are, there’s one thing for sure :
You’d have it no other way!
