Kimchi & Udupi? #FlavoursomeTuesday
Ever since I shifted my blog host to SiteGround, I have been having serious problems with my blog. Some posts don’t show, some posts are lost and some comments don’t show either. But I’m still hoping that this post somehow shows up and the Linky Party is a success.
Most people think Korean food is Kimchi – that sweet and sour appetiser served in Chinese restaurants these days. But like all cuisines, there’s more to Korean food than just Kimchi.
Driving through the erstwhile mill district of Mumbai las month, I was suprised to pass a SUNMOON restaurant at Dainik Shivner Road, just off Dr. E Moses Road. On top of it was a sign that said Shree Krishna Hotel.
I did a double take. Was I seeing right?
What was Kimchi doing with Udupi?
Well, I soon found out last week, when five of us school friends gathered at D’s house for lunch
When I posted the picture of the restaurant on my Instagram account, D responded very promptly that it was right outside her house. And since her Korean daughter-in-law had vetted it, I was quite tempted to try it out.
Unfortunately this eatery is a real hole-in-the-wall and prefers you do a takeaway through Zomato. In fact this option is very popular with its patrons, several of whom are the Korean ex-pats living or working in this area.
The brainchild of a Korean lady, the restaurant is managed by a trained Indian chef.
So it was one not so wet August afternoon that we got together at D’s house and settled down to a leisurely afternoon of lunch and gossip.
Since none of us were driving, we downed a bottle of Hardy’s demi-sec with lavash and a yummy Wingreen’s dip. Since Zomato wasn’t doing the deliveries that day and the restaurant was short staffed, we had quite a long wait. But it didn’t matter as we had plenty to talk about. We also kept the tummy monsters at bay with some delectable home made patrel.
And when the lunch came, we pounced on it like greedy women.
Since the restaurant was shortstaffed, the cook cum delivery boy made a mistake and it was a while before he got the rest of the order which was bibimbap. The chicken option was better than the vegetarian one, but by far the best was the chicken bulgogi.
We were meeting after months and the conversation flowed as smoothly as the wine. Before we knew it, we all had to go for our various meetings but we were happy that we had met over Korean especially since we discovered that D’s Korean daughter-in-law had delivered a baby girl, just as our meal came to an end.
Wasn’t that a happy coincidence?
