Making friends with Alexa #My friend Alexa Season 4

Why you should make friends with Alexa

Blogging is about sharing ideas, interacting with other bloggers, making friends and connecting with the whole world.

I have been blogging for ten years now on WordPress and for a few years before that on MSN ( Yes so very long ago) on Blogger. While I was blogging with Blogger, my goal was quite different. It was basically an online journal or an account of my daily affairs for all my friends and family. But I soon found out that friends and family are not always loyal readers and besides, that’s not what blogging is about.

Blogging is accessible to all and knows no barriers of age, sex, nationality or religion. I myself am a 61-year-old grandmother from Mumbai and even though my audience is much, much younger than I am, I find this a great platform with which to interact with others.

But despite my years of blogging, I found that I wasn’t really getting anywhere. My numbers were dismal, my visitors and followers were in single digits. I then realised that blogging was hard work. It not only involves good content but like all products or services, it requires good marketing.

This is where a campaign like Blogchatter’s #MyFriendAlexa pays good dividends.

Why You Should Participate in #MyFriendAlexa

♦ Increase numbers:  The first year that  I participated in #MyFriendAlexa, I found that on the day my blog was scheduled to go live, I got the best traffic ever. I have never experienced such a surge in traffic since.

However, I must admit that #MyFriendAlexa is not an easy campaign.

What you should watch out for in MyFriendAlexa

♦First, you have to commit to writing a certain number of posts. This year’s campaign requires you to write 8 posts in 4 weeks. Now, this is easy enough because most bloggers can easily spin out 2 blogs posts a week.

♦What is difficult is reading the 10-12 blogs posts daily. This becomes quite a task because reading also means commenting and sharing the posts on Social Media. And commenting means acknowledging comments that have been posted on your blog. Moreover, commenting means leaving a meaningful reaction. A terse ‘Wow”, “Fantastic” or even “Loved it” doesn’t hold water. As a reader, you have to share your thoughts and reactions to the post.

♦Another aspect of #MyFriendAlexa is sharing on Social Media. Now I personally found this quite difficult because I am not very familiar with the workings of Social Media. When do I use @ and when do I use #? No matter how many times I asked this question ( and got the answer), I used to get completely confused with these signs.

But would I recommend joining the campaign?

Yes if you are a newbie blogger.

Yes if you want to make friends

Yes if you want to increase numbers.

You can learn a lot through #MyFriendAlexa so don’t waste any more time just thinking about joining or not.

Finally, some pointers on how to come out on top :

Have a theme: Plan your posts around a theme. It is much easier to write when you have a theme. Besides, having a theme ensures you have readers for all 8 posts. After all, once someone is hooked on to the first post, they would want to know what happens next.

Research: Research the themes well. Choose appropriate quotes, references and choose attractive and appropriate images. Then, make sure you have actually written each post before the actual day of uploading.

Social Media Posts: Prepare your social media posts for each blog post so that you and your readers can share your posts effectively.

Brevity: Keep your posts short. Remember you have to read 101-12 posts every day. Visitors will equally have to spend that much time reading. So keep your posts crisp and readable.

Commenting and Reciprocity: Lastly, make relevant comments. Acknowledge the comments left by others on your posts.
Always visit the blog post of the person who has commented on your post, even if the person is not on the campaign schedule.

♦Above all, do not get stressed. Enjoy what you are writing and appreciate what you are reading.

Have a great time during this campaign and may you see your numbers grow!

Ciao
